Washington July 4 6 Plans for an immediate recess of Congress were upset as the House adjourned without a concurrent resolution from the Senate calling for adjournment by Aug 12. Senate leadership and President Wilson clashed over war communications control delaying action.
At a White House meeting with President Wilton and top officials, America reportedly settled on a course of action regarding intervention in Russia. Officials say a decision of importance was reached, though no formal announcement was made.
Peoria and Pekin reporters recount a disaster when the excursion steamer Columbia carrying 600 passengers broke apart after striking a sand bank near Pekin. Officials fear 100 to 150 dead with bodies recovered, divers search wreckage, and mobs threaten officers amid grief.
An Austrian official statement from Amsterdam reports a July 2 engagement where Austrian torpedo boats faced a superior enemy force. A large enemy destroyer was set afire and another damaged, while Austrian vessels sustained light damage and minor wounds to a few crew.
