Washington January 24. The War Department ordered that no man be discharged from the army against his will until he can obtain civilian employment. Telegraph orders went to divisional headquarters. Men who wish may remain temporarily in service without jeopardizing eventual discharge.
A young woman and her two children were buried alive when a landslide struck their home in Ladd Wash during a storm. The disaster swept away several buildings and was reported to Tacoma authorities after a mine official traveled 30 hours to relay news from Unis city area.
Madrid dispatch reports Marie Emeline former Queen of Portugal mother of ex King Manuel arrived incognito. Newspapers note she travelled in anonymity entering the city on January 24.

Paris January 24. Responses in the United States and England push to complete a plan for a league of nations. Delegates believe permanent peace hinges on settlement of boundaries reparations indemnities and new governments by the peace congress. British French and American delegates agree these matters cannot be covered in separate peace treaties but must be based on league principles. If peace is signed first, there may be reluctance to finish the league.
The Senate approved by 55 to 18 a $100 million measure urged by President Wilson to provide food relief in Europe and the Near East. The bill, amended to bar aid to enemy nationals, now goes to conference for minor points. Final enactment expected next week.
The New York state women’s land army conducts a two day conference in New York City on January 28 and 29 to plan future activities. Women now serve on juniv s to Michigan.
The Young Men’s Literary Club in Cheyenne held a regular meeting last evening. Members installed new officers for the year and debated a plan to push rapid construction of many homes to house current and future residents. Speakers argued over tax payment timing and indemnity terms related to Germany and its allies, with general support for a two‑payment tax schedule. Officers sworn in were W. Q. Phelan, president, A. Kelley, vice president, Avery Alaggard, secretary.
