Indictments Allege Fixer Scheme In Coal Dealer Case

George L. Baker and C. L. Allen were indicted by a federal grand jury in New York charged with conspiring to defraud coal dealers through the mails. The pair allegedly claimed influence with DOJ official W. N. Speers and promised protection from prosecution. Baker allegedly received $1,000 and $4,000 plus about $8,000 more in related payments. They pleaded not guilty and were released on $5,000 bonds each.
