Nine Americans and 40 or 50 Mexicans suffocated when Maximo Castillo burned the Cumbre tunnel to block a passenger train. A special train carrying 20 Americans and 60 coffins left for the scene as authorities blamed Castillo for the atrocity and warned of reprisals.
In California Republicans divided as meetings in Santa Barbara and Stockton unfolded. Progressives push reformist planks critiquing the state administration and tariff policy while the old guard clings to historical party lines amid legal challenges to party status. Rudolph Spreckels aided organizing efforts for the Progressive Republican faction.

Secretaries Mc Adoo and Houston led the federal reserve bank committee in El Paso where bankers from west Texas New Mexico and Arizona urged the southwest be kept in one district. They offered no recommendation on which city should host a regional bank.
Treasury announces tariff rules allowing all foreign produced material used in U S Navy ship construction to enter free of duty after March 6. Repairs for naval and other government vessels may also enter duty free from bonded warehouses, with conditions on bulk import and original equipment.
Definite word confirms Dr Stanley Krebbe of Philadelphia will deliver a lecture Monday night February 16 in the high school gymnasium. The talk titled City Drafts and Expansion is aimed at business men and is arranged by the Industrial club’s educational committee with a nationally renowned lecturer on civic and commercial progress.
John W. Ernest urges road improvements from Laramie to Cheyenne and Buford via new cutoffs and grade reductions. Albany and Carbon counties plan to upgrade routes linking Laramie, Red Buttes, and the county line, with a goal of a first class transcontinental highway.
Chairman George Walker of the Frontier Days committee sent a 30 by 6 foot banner to Dallas to advertise the 1914 Cheyenne festival to be held August for the eighteenth time. The banner will tour fairs and conventions as a perpetual reminder of the wild west show and the top prize money for riders ropers and performers. Rules for the world championship bucking and pitching contest were wired to the Dallas chamber for use at the fairgrounds.
Mrs Kingsley Swan sought a Reno divorce after New York pleasures but found the city hor ribly dull. She toured San Francisco the Paris of the West and publicity from tango at the St Francis hotel. She then returned to Reno to wait the months needed for residence and court proceedings.
Washington February 7 The senate committee added 172000 to the fortifications bill for war preparedness. The measure now carries 176,000 above the last session's appropriation, with the largest rise in armament for fortifications. House Mountain and siege cannon funding could rise to 2 million. ammunition for these guns was boosted from 900000 to 2000000 in the senate action. The committee initially increased the item to 1.6 million.
An 80 year old woman known as Grandma Ellison died in a house fire in Benkelman Nebraska. The blaze started presumably from an overturned lamp and Mrs Ellison who lived alone left four relatives in Nebraska and a daughter in Colorado.
President Wilson signed into law a bill regulating postal money orders. The act allows orders to be payable at any money order office even if drawn on a specific office. Rules from the postmaster general will set the start of the new system to increase money order business and aid the business public.
Newark report: Mazel Herdman dies after taking poison and confesses she shot Mrs. Chas J Manning to enable marriage to Manning. Manning held by police. authorities say he is father of Herdman’s baby. He and Herdman were arrested then released for lack of evidence.
Pedigreed dogs from over 200 kennels will compete at the Westminster Kennel Club thirty eighth annual show at Grand Central Palace starting February 23. Major attractions include many pomeranians, foxhounds, and German sheep dogs, with sheep dogs gaining popularity and pomeranians remaining favorites.
Pittsburg February 7. President Barney Dreyfuss vows to block the Federal League by all means but avoid court action. He plans to push for a joint meeting of the National and American leagues in New York to prevent any legal cases over player jumpers from reaching the courts.

Chicago Feb 7 Mrs Vivian I Cahill seeks divorce alleging her husband kicked her from the rope during performances. She testified he forced her to crawl between his feet as he balanced on the rope and kicked her into the net in view of spectators.
Cold weather sweeps the Mississippi Valley and plains pushing below zero readings as far as Texas. Blizzard conditions in Missouri and Kansas with winds to 25 mph intensify hardships. Forecasters predict a broad west to east cold spell easing by the weekend with lingering snow in the upper lake region.
Charles Bender alias Gluck Tony confessed to police that he killed Kenry Nickell, an Omaha bank teller, during a resort hold up in Pueblo Colorado. He admitted taking diamonds worth about six thousand dollars and two hundred dollars in cash, claiming others fled with loot while he endured bodily harm during pursuit.
