Fate gives Sharkey break as Wilde rival in America
Jack Sharkey, New York bantam, lands as the first challenger to Jimmy Wilde in the United States, delivering a drubbing that boosts Sharkey’s stock. He earned 2000 dollars from Wilde and drew offers around 5000 dollars afterward as promoters kept courting him for bigger purses. He had fought Pat Moore, Pete Herman, Johnny Conlon, Young Zulu Kid, Joe Lynch, and Frankie Burns, and his win over Wilde sparked demand for future bouts.
