Rebels Attack City Chihuahuahu and Force Release of Prisoners

Ninety mutineers aided by recruits after a sharp fight compelled Governor Gonzales to release from the penitentiary Antonio Rojas and three of his followers. Five rurals were killed, including Silverio Orozco. Rojas led about 300 men to demand releases and entry to the city. The attack caused widespread panic, with houses closed and fires started. The mutineers retained arms and planned to join Gomez’s campaign.

Taft urges Alaska rail link and commission government

President Taft asked Congress to create a trunk railroad and a commission form of government for Alaska. He favored private enterprise for some services but urged federal action to spur development, including a leasing plan for Alaska lands and reforms to extend federal care to the territory. He doubted Morgan Guggenheim interests would build under current terms.

Reception for Supt W M Jeffers Honors Union Pacific Leader

The Industrial club hosted an informal reception for W. M. Jeffers, newly appointed division superintendent of Union Pacific, formerly Green River Utah division chief. Jeffers, born in North Platte, announced plans to move to Cheyenne with his family and urged business leaders to visit him at the office. He pledged fair treatment for Cheyenne and hoped shop employees would soon be allowed to spend money downtown with protection.

Negro Assault Report From Cheyenne Sparks City Tension

An elderly woman, Mrs. A. Y. Jones, 60, was attacked at her Cheyenne home at 281 B Street by a burly negro soldier who tried to outrage her. The assailant fled as her husband, awakened by screams, pursued but could not catch him. Police identified clues and a cap linked to troops of the 1st Cavalry, with later statements shifting alibis as investigators pursued the case.
