Australian troops captured a German 280 millimeter gun with a full ammunition supply. The weapon, a recent model with a range exceeding 18 miles, was intended for the bombardment of Amiens and mounted on a railway train. It has been brought to Paris where the public may inspect it.
In a sustained offensive, British troops under Field Marshal Haig press toward Bapaume with heavy fighting and significant gains. Bray Thiepval Grandcourt and other towns reported captured. over 2,000 German prisoners taken as forces around Miraumont and Avesnes-les-Bapaume advance.
London reports a public information statement praising Ensign T. J. Murphy at a naval air station. He studies marked maps to track German submarines, knows air needs and depth charge effects, and even records when subs surface for the skipper to smoke. The note says his knowledge surpasses many other ensigns.
London dispatch says New Zealanders advancing toward Bapaume captured Cojeul after a rapid, irresistible dash with other local successes noted. Cojeul, marked on maps as a river nine miles north of Bapaume, may also be a nearby village.
Savannah August 24. The wireless station on Tybee Island picked up parts of a South Carolina coast call from a vessel reporting it was being chased by a submarine. The message was unclear and the vessel's name could not be identified.
Washington dispatch reports an eight billion dollar revenue bill, the largest tax program in history, brought to the house for consideration. Chairman Kitchin announced the plan aims to pass the measure after a week of debate starting Monday September 2.
Paris dispatch reports rapid European growth of the American University Union, adding branches in London and Rome while maintaining Paris headquarters. Prof. J. W. Cunliffe leads the London office at 16 Pall Mall, East, with hotel quarters at St. James Palace hotel in Bury Street.

Two members of the Tenth Division underwent an initial review at Camp Funston before Major General Leonard Wood and governors Capper of Kansas and Roux of Wyoming among others. The division, formed two weeks earlier, numbers about 30 000 men and drew praise for its discipline and drill.
Observers report long range German guns firing toward Soissons and smoke seen from fires burning along the front north of the Aisne. Prisoners say they cannot explain the fires which have burned for some days as forces appear to be retreating north of the Vesle toward the Vesie.
At an Atlantic port on Aug 24 a steam pipe explosion on a docked German liner transport caused seven deaths among coal passers in the ship’s auxiliary ramn. Many were injured, rescuers found several others scalded dead. Naval authorities offered no explanation and no police report was filed. The ship had been large and popular before government seizure after the war entry and had lingered in harbor undergoing repairs.
Partly cloudy conditions persist in Wyoming with cooler air settled in the northern portion. Forecasters expect gradual stabilization and light winds through the day.
California Nevada and Arizona governors along with university presidents and other notables are invited to a Pacific division Red Cross conference next Saturday to discuss an educational war program in the Pacific schools. Mrs Harry Kruegel directed the call.
Provost Marshal General Crowder announced selective drafts for September with 155,270 men to enter training camps Aug 39 to Sept 6. States and the District of Columbia are summoned. 135,000 white and about 40,270 colored men are called for limited service. Entrains run Sept 1 to 6 to camps including Fort Riley, Camp Funston, and Camp Lewis.
A fire at the Green River Whiskey Company plant in Owensboro started at 7 p.m. and by 10:50 p.m. had wiped out the facility, 45 000 barrels of whisky, and caused losses over 3 million dollars. Whisky value alone was about 2.85 million, with government tax losses near 6 million.
The Anti-Saloon League is effectively organized in Wyoming, led by Superintendent Crabbe. The campaign operates state headquarters in Cheyenne with a broad church network and two years of campaign planning. The league trains volunteers, conducts statewide polls on prohibition, and plans speakers to canvass towns as the dry cause gains momentum.
Dayton boxer Harry Kellar was knocked out in the first round of a scheduled 15 round bout with Dempsey in Dayton. Kellar was cold after taking the punch as the fight opened.
German official bulletin claims fighting with Allied forces along the Scarpe and Somme sectors near Arras Thiepval and Bayalaime. British assaults east of Albert and toward the Somme reportedly failed amid heavy losses to the enemy.
Fragmentary text notes soldiers with red handkerchiefs in pockets of warm coats and mentions Allied advances in France and Italy. It claims Italian and French fronts produced simultaneous outcomes, including Austrian setbacks near the Pare, but details are incomplete and the passage is inconsistent.
