Berlin reports Turkish regiments repulsed four Allied landing attempts on Gallipoli and claim 12 000 prisoners as the battle raged. A Paris press note says 8 000 French and British troops were driven to the sea.
In Washington DAR contests the west and east clash over the president general nominees Mrs George Thacher Guernsey of Kansas and Mrs William Cummings Story of New York. Guernsey promotes a platform advocating a single three year term for all national officers and no mileage for officers or chairmen.
In Trinidad Colorado on April 28 the prosecution rested its case against John R. Lawson, United Federation labor leader, charged with the October 25, 1919 murder of deputy sheriff John Nimmo near Ludlow. Prosecutors aim to show Nimmo died in a battle with striking miners and deputies in which Lawson participated. Defense questions target witness credibility as Lawson opposed violence and arms were supplied to strikers for defense. many defense witnesses subpoenaed.
In Syracuse on April 28 Theodore Roosevelt finished his cross-examination after answering questions about speeches salary and traveling expenses from his presidency. He had been on the stand for about thirty and a half hours in total.
Governor Kendrick urges schools and citizens to observe Arbor Day by planting trees and shrubbery. The article highlights forests as water reservoirs, absorbing rain through a leaf litter sponge, reducing floods, maintaining steady stream flow, and preventing soil erosion and drought, stressing conservation via tree planting.
The Rev. Father Peter A. Sasse, living in Sterling for over six years, was arrested by Sheriff Patterson with Deputy DatMet Attor ney D. J. Van Bradt and J. W. Red mond on charges of bootlegging and illegal operations. Bond set at 300 in County court and 2,009 in District court, with two county informations alleging purchase of liquor and a district case claiming an unlawful act by the priest toward a woman in the parsonage. He is about 60, previously connected with Cheyenne Sheridan and Georgetown churches.
In Grant county Wilson creek country crickets destroy six hundred acres of wheat. C W Creel of the federal agriculture department reports thousands of insects invade the valley. A six mile patrol fights the pests on a 6000 acre farm as Governor Lister is asked for ten thousand dollars in aid.
Somerville Tennessee April 28 a mob seized Thomas Brooks who had been held in Memphis county jail for murder and hanged him from a railroad trestle seven miles from Somerville after forcing jailers to release him during a transport to trial.
Four masked men raided Isidore Meyers’s Crooked River ranch near Pauline Butte firing about 1000 shots, burning the sheep camp and killing at least fifty sheep while wounding many others. Sheep herder M Montgomery says he was ordered aside during the assault. The incident follows a recent arson against J N Williamson’s Willamson ranch hinting at ongoing sheepman cattleman tension.
Laredo Texas reports a 25000 dollar price on former Mexican President Huerta. Duval West, the president's representative in Mexico, travels from Mexico City to Vera Cruz to brief on talks with rival Mexican leaders. Messages praise Brazilian minister Oliveira for safeguarding American interests in Mexico City after the U S severed relations.
In Little Falls Minnesota on April 28 Fred Middleton 27 of St. Paul who with James Evans a Bt Floyd reformatory inmate fought police at Staples and was fatally shot after fleeing to a swamp. Evans was shot in the foot and later bit while fleeing as Officer Munson tried to overpower him.
A major blaze in St Paul on April 28 devastated the Severn Wabash Engoth and St Peter block. Flames ruined over 100 000 volumes in the St Paul library and injured sixteen firemen with one possibly dead. Total damage estimated at 425 600 as crews battled through the night and authorities weighed causes from spontaneous combustion to crossed wires.

Eight fans witnessed twelve rapid rounds of offense between Sam McVey and Joe Jeanette in Boston. The bout ended in a draw though McVey seemed to hold a slight edge on the night, with both men delivering hard exchanges from start to finish.
