In Washington on April 17 General Crowder said May will see mobilization of fifty thousand men plus the drafted quota, nearly three times the month’s allotment. By June eight hundred thousand of the second draft will be in training camps. Crowder noted men can be sent to camps as space allows. The House military affairs committee reported a registration measure for men who are now twenty two since June 5 last. A rule will be sought for quick House action so Crowder can arrange the June 5 registration day.
Warington April 17 The secretary of war Baker said the big thing for America is to support the war financially in sentiment and in relief. Soldiers welcomed the news that they would be sent home to rest and be relieved from duty with enthusiasm.
Washington April 17 United Press reports congressman William Jones of Virginia's district aged the oldest in continuous service died at George Washington University Hospital after several days of paralysis. He suffered a stroke leading to his death.
In Wondon on April 17, Lloyd George signaled the government will press a home rule bill immediately. He warned he would resign if the House rejects the measure, while the wartime policy debate focused on Irish self-government and broader power questions.
