A tornado devastated Marquette Kansas leaving 26 dead and 26 injured. Emergency crews battled fearsome damage as residents assessed ruined homes and streets. Authorities urged caution and shelter as search efforts continued.
In Marquette Kansas a tornado left twenty six dead and forty four injured with many families wiped out. The tally later rose to twenty nine including Mrs A V Anderson Arthur Carlson and Elmer Carlson. Relief reached the stricken town from Bethany College sending twenty five pupil nurses and aid teams. The town's rescue and aid effort began organizing as chaos gave way to relief.
In Chicago on May 9, Mrs. Charles Price of Bloomington had her cremated remains scattered on Lake Michigan after her body was cremated at Graceland cemetery. Her husband Charles Price's ashes were disposed of two months earlier. Mrs Price had asked that their ashes mingle in the lake, a request carried out by relatives who arranged a boat trip after her death.
Milwaukee reports the Bigelow defalcation amount as 1,549,133.63 in an unsecured creditor claim filed after the first formal creditors meeting. Bigelow was absent and listed exemptions with the clerk including life insurance for his wife worth 400,000, a library, clothes, two horses, and provisions for a year.
The Montezuma Valley Irrigation District completed a contract with the Montezuma Ditch Co through T. Henry of Denver. The transfer includes old ditches and water rights and plans for new reservoirs and ditches to cover 50 000 acres, funded by a $750 000 bond issue.

Two hundred fifty passengers on the ferry New York were saved after a collision with the Maryland a railroad float tore a large section from the New York pierced her side fourteen feet and left the crew to lash the vessels together. The Maryland crew and captain acted quickly to secure lines and guide the ferry to pier 20 as panic and damage spread through the cabins.
The Alabama brought news of an hour long ocean race with seven U S battleships. They were 200 miles south of Cape Henry when a speed test began last Saturday. Missouri led, finishing 126.5 miles in eight hours and ending 74.5 miles south of Cape Henry.

A certificate of incorporation for the Carnegie Foundation a membership corporation to manage a ten million dollar fund for pensions for teachers in universities colleges and technical schools in the United States Canada and Newfoundland was filed in the county clerk s office today. The trustees named by Andrew Carnegie and announced by Frank K. Vanderlip April 27 are named as directors.
The terms of August Belmont as chairman and associates E D Morgan and John Sanford on the State racing commission expire today. Pressure mounts on Governor Higgins to reappoint the Belmont slate while Republicans push for control. Alarmists warn racing may decline without the Belmont commission.

Trinidad Colo May 9 W L Courtney a father lies in Sisters hospital with concussion and numerous nails lodged in his throat after falling from a fourth story scaffold at the Columbian hotel He struck a beam 25 feet below and remains delirious and seriously injured at about 35 years old and unmarried.
Oscar Hammerstein announced plans to sue Building Inspector Hopper for 10000 damages after a mandamus case forced a license to be issued for the Victoria theatre. He stated the inspector caused him trouble and vowed further action.
A touring automobile bought by W. B. Thombs in Portland Maine yesterday leaped from the curb with no one in the car and sped a mile along the promenade injuring a man and causing two runaways before plunging over a forty foot embankment and being demolished.
The Union Pacific reports a route change for the Presidential train sending it across the Missouri River at Blair Nebraska and transferring to the Northwestern at Fremont for a direct line to Chicago. The trip from Denver was pleasant with brief speeches by the President from his car rear platform and daily news bulletins transmitted along the train.
The centennial of Frederich von Schiller's death is celebrated across the United States by German and German American societies led by the National Alliance of German Societies from Philadelphia. The events, starting last Sunday, include a religious program and mark Schiller as a beloved figure in German culture. He died May 9, 1905, and was born November 1759.
Four to five hundred ministers from various churches gather in Brooklyn to open the Episcopal Church Congress. Bishop Brewster of Connecticut delivers the opening address and Rt. Rev. Frederick Burgess of Long Island presides. The congress, held when the Triennial General Conference does not meet, covers topics of church and community interest, not legislative matters. An earthquake at Bender Abbas Persia on April 26 triggered a landslide that buried fifty people. Two hundred yards of the Khgando mountainside collapsed behind the town as buildings fell and casualties occurred. Seismic shocks have continued since April 25 with neighboring villages hit hard.

Judge Linnings in the United States district court granted a writ of habeas corpus for Anna Valentina the woman murderer of a rival in love. The stay prevents her execution planned for Friday in Hackensack.
In Bleefont Pennsylvania on May 9 Ira Green and William Dillon were hanged for the murder of Jerry Quondo a turnkey in Center County jail. About one thousand people witnessed the execution.
A wind storm in Kingman Kansas caused extensive property damage this afternoon. A two story brick structure collapsed and resident John L. Franks was fatally injured.
