Volunteers faced deadly black damp as rescuers pulled 22 bodies from the pit by tonight. Despite progress, fumes slowed search and many rescuers were overcome. Officials fear more deaths as only a small portion of the mine remains to be explored and time runs low.
Stockholm reports King Oscar of Sweden is dying after an unconscious day. Crown Prince Gustave was named regent last Wednesday. A late bulletin noted no essential change in the king's condition as physicians administer stimulants to prolong life.
Five hundred masked night riders invaded Hopkinsville Kentucky early today. They looted property valued over 200000 and set fires. The mob damaged police fire offices and rail facilities while citizens stayed indoors. One tobacco buyer Lindsay Mitchell was beaten and a railroad brakeman shot in the back while moving a train.
Miss Florence Todd arrived from France and tried to pass seven trunks of clothing duty free. Though her home is New Orleans, she has lived in France five years. Officials say seven trunks of bridal and mourning wear, valued at 10 dollars, exceed a reasonable amount under the law and hold the goods.

A Northern Pacific engine on the Burke and Wallace branch exploded yesterday morning in Missoula injuring multiple crew and killing several men. Memphis Tennessee December 7 Judge Malone of the circuit court says he would favor a law imposing the extreme penalty of death for a horse that kills a jockey by kicking. He argues the horse poses a murderous danger and the life of the jockey must be protected as human life is valued highly.
London reports Tommy Turis who beat Gunner Maly on Monday accepts a challenge from Jen Rovhe of Weston and Jack Mayner of Now Montioon. Sporting Life posts $2,600 purse with minimum $7,500. Burns expected to fight both opponents in London.
