Satellite association seeks interim licences for TVRO pilots

Canada Satellite Television Association backed a campaign to win interim licences for satellite TV operators in remote Canadian communities. Delegates pressed the federal government during a Fort St. John conference to allow TVROs to transmit signals and secure loans via licence approval. The group plans to become a national voice for TVRO operators, with about 80 to 100 operations nationwide.

Residents named to Northern British Columbia Advisory Council

Senator H A Bud Olson announced the Governor in Council approved the Northern British Columbia Advisory Council. Patrick Walsh of Fort St John will be chairman with George Miller of Lower Post as vice chairman. The council includes 10 members to advise on minimizing adverse social and environmental effects and maximizing benefits of the Northern Pipeline Project.

Material sought for Peace historic book

The Historic Book Committee of Dawson Creek seeks material for a book on the History of the South Peace and plans to publish before year end 1981. The Chetwynd Village Council was invited to the public meeting on September 17. Three Chetwynd residents attended the meeting.

Local history seeks pre 1945 South Peace settlers stories

The committee invites area residents to share narratives of individuals who arrived to settle in the South Peace School District before 1945. Stories should focus on the main character and evolve beyond 1945 to reflect long-term settlement experiences within the district.

Low forest fire danger with active prescribed burning in province

Victoria BC reports generally low fire danger across the province with sunny warmth early week then cooler, cloudy weather and showers later. Prescribed burning continues to prepare planting sites, reduce wildfire risk, and improve range and wildlife habitat as 48 new fires are logged this week and 49 fires remain, all minor.

Bennett Opens Peace Canyon Dam in Public Ceremony

Premier Bill Bennett inaugurated the Peace Canyon Project in a 2 pm ceremony six kilometers upstream from Hudson Hope. Six years and 510 million dollars funded the dam which houses four large turbines and generators. A public tour followed the ceremony of the powerhouse and Canyon Visitor's Centre with exhibits on energy and Peace River archaeology and history. A buffet luncheon preceded the event at Chetwynd Elks Hall with the Premier and cabinet.

Marathon set for October 5 at Moberly Lake Bridge race

The KHA 13 mile half marathon will be held Sunday October 5 at 11 am starting at the Moberly Lake Bridge on highway 29. Prizes awarded to top overall finishers and best in age divisions. Police National Curling Championship 1981 in Dawson Creek

The 1981 Canadian Police Curling Championship will be held at the Dawson Creek Curling Club in Dawson Creek British Columbia. Twelve police teams from all provinces plus the Yukon Northwest Territories compete in a round robin followed by a sudden death playoff on March 14 1981. The top two teams contest a final to determine the champion.

The Chetwynd Lions Club will hold a crab sale in the IGA parking lot on October 3 or 11. Crabs are sourced from Prince Rupert and transported via Terrace and Prince George to Chetwynd, with all proceeds supporting local charities.
