Chetwynd Council hears on curling rink and recreation plans

At the September 24 meeting Recreation Director Dennis Nightwonger outlined a proposed curling rink at 1,125,000 with construction 1981 to 1983 and a library extension funded at about 130,000 over two years. The council heard reports from Colin Reid and the Recreation Association on facilities and future plans.

Peace Canyon hydroelectric project opens in British Columbia

Premier W R Bennett officiates the opening of B C Hydros Peace Canyon hydroelectric project on the Peace River west of Fort St John. The $510 million facility will yield about 34 billion kilowatt hours yearly, roughly 13 percent of Hydro’s total sales, with a six year build and over 1000 workers. The project links to the W A C Bennett Dam creating Williston Lake, and comprises earthfill, spillway and intake structures.

Premier tours Sukunka area in north east coal region

The Premier and Cabinet Ministers toured the Sukunka area by helicopter with reporters, visiting Quintette Mountain and the Dennison Mine coal fields. A luncheon at Elks Hall urged firsthand view of the rugged, vast northeast coal region, amid wind and snowball fun with CBC and CTV cameras.

The Chetwynd Lions Club sponsors a crab sale in the IGA parking lot on October 3 with crab priced at 3.75 dollars each. The event may run through October 11 depending on stock and demand.

Echo Progress Edition Out of Copies After High Demand

The Echo announces a large readership for the September 17 Progress Edition, printing over 2 000 copies and exhausting supply. Plans are in motion to print more next year to meet demand, with the goal of increasing copies beyond this year’s total.
