Local Chamber luncheon highlights education and jobs program

Dr Newberry superintendent and John Bates spoke at Chetwynd B C about a new pilot test program to keep potential dropouts in school by linking employment with education. The Dawson Creek pilot aims to place seven teens in jobs, with later expansion to other district schools.

Change in site choice hearings for Hasler Flats dispute

The Hasler Flats group objects to 309 acres being removed from Agriculture Reserve arguing loss of ranch self sufficiency and soil harm from sulphur dioxide. Verbal input was given in Prince George on Sept 29 while written briefs were filed in Burnaby on Oct 4 with Fort St. John as the alternative venue.

Ramp planned for Williston Lake access road

A boat launching ramp will be built at Dunlevy Creek on the north shore of the Peace Beach at Williston Lake. Minister Sam Rawlf of Recreation and Conservation announced the project. B C Hydro will contribute 75000 toward the required access road construction.

Village studies vandalism to push for action in Chetwynd

The Village Council will work with merchants, business leaders, and Chamber of Commerce to draft a brief to the Attorney General seeking a Probation Officer for Chetwynd. They list doors, glass fronts, green spaces, signs, and vehicles damaged, airport vandalism, and nightly noise as ongoing issues.

Village Council Reconsiders Accounting Firm Change

The village council faced a call to revisit its earlier decision to shift its auditing to M Erickson as he leaves Winspear Higgens Stevenson & Co. G Slowinski CA of Winspear voiced disappointment, noting his firm has managed village accounts since incorporation and still runs the current audit program. The Parks Branch plans a boat ramp project on Williston Lake with $100,000 set aside, aiming public use by summer 1978 after ice melt, in coordination with BC Hydro.

Chetwynd Gets Girl Guide District Leader

Commissioner appointed for Chetwynd Mrs. R. Larsen takes on duties as Girl Guide District Commissioner after announcement by Mrs. Sonia Strogryn Area Commissioner at the first Local Association meeting. Chetwynd joins Peace River Guiding Area with seven districts and over 35 registered Brownies and Guides.

Objects to motion on omission in report

Ald Schmok objected to a motion by Ald Dunn to write the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing about leaving Village of Chetwynd out of a press report listing municipalities on Hugh Curtis northern tour. Council debated mobile salespeople on public streets and pollution from fruit and fish trucks.

Village permits total two million for Chetwynd this year

Building activity in Chetwynd totals 2,207,999.00 from year to date with 43 permits issued. One permit for 294,954.00 was returned as a business building west of the Dairy Bar near Windrem Creek was canceled. September added seven permits valued at 780,100.00 including five residences totaling 775,200.00. Local displays may extend to private property for mobile sales. Captain Cook Celebrations will fund 20 cents per capita. Discussions included Smile Campaign participation and council letters about Sail Past with no firm motion supporting.
