Wood Works campaign eyes broader wood product use
The Wood Works effort by the Canadian Wood Council expands beyond structural wood for buildings to promote a wide range of value added wood products including crafts. Since its launch a year ago it has spread from Prince George and Chicoutimi Jonquiere to the Okanagan with provincial support, municipal resolutions, and an $80,000 award program to reward communities that maximize wood in municipal buildings. The initiative, backed by Forest Renewal BC and Canfor officials, could boost BC sales by 85 million annually and create 400 jobs, with potential national and cross border growth to billions in wood product sales if broadened to nonstructural products. Community groups and small businesses are urged to participate as the movement broadens toward more wood usage and education for designers and processors.
