Regrouping as Freeze Up Tightens Clean Up Efforts
An information session in Pembina drew about 25 residents to discuss oil spill cleanup after a pipe break released roughly 951 cubic metres of oil. Recoveries totaled 260 cubic metres from Pine River and 115 cubic metres at the spill site, with 20 cubic metres in absorbents and 350 to 500 cubic metres in soil. Remaining oil is variably volatized, dissolved, absorbed, burned, or still in the river.

Chetwynd Water Report Highlights Gaps in Plan
The July 2000 Peace Liard drinking water review notes no documented Emergency Response Plan for Chetwynd. Dr. Kay Wotton says the 1996 plant operates well with excellent finished water quality, but about 75 percent of raw samples show bacteria and monthly sampling may miss issues. 1998 had two positive treated samples. 1999 had none. data cover every Peace Liard community.

Chief Forester Pedersen visits Chetwynd for NFPA dinner
In Chetwynd BC the Chief Forester Larry Pedersen spoke at a community dinner hosted by Northern Forest Products Association with guests from Hudson’s Hope Taylor Tumbler Ridge Fort St John and Dawson Creek. NFPA education program for Grade 5 students won two excellence awards and Pedersen noted his duties exclude stumpage. He highlighted 20 years in forest service including 5.5 in private sector and a $25 million unspecified item.

Water test drill to be completed near Waldie property
At last week’s council meeting the District of Chetwynd approved spending 30 000 to finish air drilling, development and testing of the current water test drill beside the treatment plant near the Waldie property. The drill hits an aquafir at 454 feet and the engineer and driller agree to complete the test with Pembina Pipeline Corporation funding.
