Extra billing ban takes effect in British Columbia
The Medicare Protection Act Bill 54, in effect since September 30, bans extra billing by MSP enrolled physicians and by any physician in publicly funded hospitals or community care facilities. It protects about 3000 Medicare services, keeps doctors paid the full rate, and introduces a $10 million tray service fee to cover minor in-office procedures. The act enshrines universality and accessibility, safeguarding BC from an American style health system.
