Province grants regional districts power to approve rural subdivisions
British Columbia regional districts will gain optional authority to approve rural subdivisions starting in 1996, consolidating this function with land use duties. The transfer, supported by Transportation Minister Jackie Pement and Municipal Affairs Minister Darlene Marzari, follows extensive consultation and allows districts to set fees while retaining highway-related approvals by the Ministry. The Islands Trust may also adopt the function, with the province supplying guidance and transition support.
