Critters and Beasties of Moberly Lake
On a cold misty afternoon at Moberly Lake a diverse array of wildlife converges at feeders. About 150 to 200 evening grosbeaks feed on black sunflower seeds while pine grosbeaks are absent. Chickadees, blue jays, and various woodpeckers vie for seeds, with chickadees stashing caches and returning to feed. A large flock of grosbeaks departs by mid afternoon and a smaller, mostly female flock arrives. Waterbirds include three dufflehead ducks, with uncertainty over their identity relative to tame ducks or Canada geese. Nearby raptors and scavengers appear as a bald eagle watches the water. Ravens perch along the beach while a dog named Charlie reacts to them. A weasel tracks along the rocks, pauses to survey the lake, and is later seen near a shed and garage amid bunny tracks. The scene ends with the weasel investigating the garage area and scenting potential meals.
