Aboriginal mentoring program ends amid funding dispute
The Aboriginal Mentoring and Training Association AMTA formerly Aboriginal Mine Training Association halted its BC skills program after a dispute with Employment and Social Development Canada over questionable expense claims and funding accountability. Over 2013 eighteen West Moberly and Saulteau First Nations students completed a five week session, with many graduates securing mining and natural resource jobs. The $10 million federal budget supported over 1,000 participants, and the name change to AMTA partly spurred the dispute as Ottawa seeks clearer fund use. A 2013 PricewaterhouseCoopers report noted graduates earned an average of $53,000 annually.
