CBC eyes Chetwynd for film setting

CBC executives led by Patrick Watson will visit Chetwynd on Thursday November 4 to survey the town as a potential film location. They plan a two day stay to inspect the Metis Housing Project and consider it as material for a future production. Mayor Oberle will brief them on the town and project.

Chetwynd Population Seen Doubling by 1974

Census figures show Chetwynd village population at 1253 with district totals forthcoming. BC Hydro customers rise from 707 to 780 since 1969, with forecasts predicting 200 more in 1972-73 and 300 by 1973-74 led by Sukunka coal development. Village assessments climb from 1.588 million in 1967 to 1.990 million in 1971.

Quiet Hallowe'en week in Chetwynd sees minor incidents

Chetwynd police report a calm Hallowe'en weekend with little damage aside from egg throwing. A juvenile pleaded guilty to theft under 50 for stealing a radio from a village store and awaits a pre-sentence report. Another youth faces wilful damage charges after kicking a hotel door on October 28, with $50 in damages. A single car crash October 29 eight miles west caused $2,000 damage. driver John Friesen lost control on icy roads but no injuries. Mrs Jean Hucul of Prince George sustained lacerations in an October 31 crash 32 miles west of Chetwynd. vehicle damaged $2,000. No charges expected.

Park grant talk from Dawson Creek conference

Ed Hoffman returned from the Federal Employment Program conference in Dawson Creek and praised the program. He suggested it could clear parkland for the village south of the business section and said Chetwynd could win grants for arena development and the park clearing project.

Park board re scheduled meeting by Fred Bagg

The Parks and Exhibition Association held a poorly attended annual meeting with 10 of 15 needed for a quorum. It was rescheduled for Wednesday November 1 at 8 p.m. in the Community Hall. A lively regular meeting discussed hall rental rates function and village council plans. Joe Schalk reports 90 hockey enthusiasts viewed films at Elks Hall and next meeting is due within two weeks.

Mayor seeks $60,000 federal grants for arena project

Mayor Frank Oberle plans to apply for about $60,000 in federal grants to fund the arena development and add an artificial ice plant. The program aims to create local jobs, with applications through Canada Manpower. A Dawson Creek meeting outlined criteria and Archie Taylor says $100 million is available to assist local groups.
