Walkathon Raises Over 400 For Chetwynd School
The Don Titus Elementary School in Chetwynd received more than 400 from an eight mile walkathon held along the Moberly Lake road between 7 30 a m and 9 30 a m. Organised by George Smith the event saw 12 year old Neil L Heureux finish the eight miles in under 70 minutes. Norman Garbonowski took second with Peter Oberle third. Regional library delegates meet at Northern Conference
Twelve delegates from the Peace District attended the Northern Regional Conference on Libraries at Prince George on May 26. They reviewed the Library Development Commission proposal for a province wide library system in British Columbia and viewed an AV presentation on northern libraries. The Minister of Lands, Forests and Water Resources, Ray Williston, praised planning for the year 2000. Anne Holloway spoke as a mail borrower, Bill Kennedy discussed financing, and a panel answered questions on regional library finances and operations. Roy Stokes of the University School of Librarianship contributed to the discussion.

Agreement boosts air service linking Prince George to Edmonton
Two airlines finalize an agreement to improve air service among Prince George Dawson Creek and Edmonton, with NT Air receiving approval to link Dawson Creek Mackenzie Grande Prairie Whitecourt Hinton and Prince George and Pacific Western Airlines adding a summer schedule including Sunday flights to Edmonton from Dawson Creek. The plan envisions five day a week service starting June 7 with an inaugural flight June 3 and potential growth to more daily flights as demand warrants, including possible Dawson Creek Edmonton direct routings via Prince George.

Hydro pays taxes to towns and province total 25 million
Hydro paid 11 535 in taxes to the Village of Chetwynd in 1971. It says it pays school taxes like other taxpayers but is exempt from general taxes, instead giving grants to municipalities. In 1971, 118 municipalities shared about 9.4 million in grants and Hydro paid over 16 million in various state and local taxes, totaling more than 25 million.

Chamber hears Alaska road rally report at May meeting
The Associated Chamber of Commerce held its May 27 dinner in Chetwynd with local president John Stewart welcoming delegates from Fort Nelson Fort St. John Taylor Hudson's Hope Dawson Creek and Chetwynd. Tony Brummer spoke on the Alaska Road Rally and Don Leach reported on B C tourist promotion trips to California citing 75 delegates and 138 speeches. Leach showed area slides noting audience admiration for the Peace River country. Plans include a three day Prince George conference next year an Inuvik chamber amalgam in fall and finishing the Fort Simpson road to the Nelson River this summer. An artist sketch for the Calgary Stampede booth was shown and a Hootenanny proposal discussed. Clubs are invited to submit meeting dates for a proposed regional calendar to avoid overlaps.

Fire hazard grows in Chetwynd area with multiple blazes
Since May 1 six human caused fires have occurred in the Chetwynd region. Incidents include a hillside blaze at Moberly Lake on April 30 and fires near Peace Hill Hudson's Hope, Dunlevy Creek, and Old Baldy. A helicopter was used to drop water to extinguish the last flames.
