Canfor Investments reports first annual loss in 1982

Vancouver Canfor Investments Ltd reports a 1982 loss of 12.707 million, the first in its history, as recession hurts forest industry holdings. Don Phillips Re-elected In South Peace River District Race

Voters in South Peace River turned out strongly to choose three candidates. Incumbent Don Phillips won with 64.3 percent and 5,777 votes, while Liberal Litwin captured 2.6 percent and NDP candidate Patrick Michiel trailed. Turnout reached 68 percent of 13,211 eligible voters, up from 66 percent in 1979.

Regional district opening marks expansion in Dawson Creek

William Wanka the first Chair of the Peace River Liard Regional District cut the ribbon for the new Alaska Avenue office addition with Jack Hannam and guests including Don Phillips present. About 50 visitors attended as Wanka recalled the district’s growth and its role serving Dawson Creek Taylor Hudson's Hope Chetwynd Pouce Coupe and Fort Nelson. The expanded facility aims to provide wider and better service after years in the Teepee and the 1979 planning move to a new complex. the $710 372 project was awarded October 28 1981 to Wandy's Construction with Killick Metz Bowen and Rose as architects.

Arts Alive conference a success in Chetwynd

Delegates gathered in Chetwynd for the Fourth Annual Arts Alive conference held May 6 to 8 at the Elks Hall. Mayors, organizers, and ABCAC president welcomed attendees, with sessions on Shared Resources, Tourism, and Summer Programs. Conference tours visited Hudson Hope and the W A C Bennett Dam.

CRTC approves Chetwynd Communications Society license

The CRTC approved the Chetwynd Communications Society application, a decision praised by MP Frank Oberle as a breakthrough for isolated Canadian communities. The ruling sets a precedent for North access to service, while 544 Cable remains licensed and seeks rate increases and licence extensions. CANCOM transmitters will distribute unscrambled CHAN-T Vancouver and CHCH-T programs.
