Residents and organizations meet under Lions Club committee to explore celebration days tied to the Rodeo and Parade. They discussed coordinating activities and a possible August fall fair if the concept is approved, with census questions added later.
The ministry announces tender opening May 7 for a pile load test on a proposed Pine River crossing at Twidwell Bend near Chetwynd. The test area lies 53.37 metres downstream of the bridge site as approaches already under construction. The Northeast Development Road program links Twidwell Bend and Dickenbusch Creek bridges with broader plans for coal region access and expansion.
Open Council on Monday April 28 1980 approved buying a used 4500 J D dozer a J D backhoe and a 700 truck and trailer at an estimated 36000 funded by the Provincial Budget. Administrator A Teslyk recommended the purchase after a thorough check. The council also approved selling a J D 410 loader backhoe and a cat grader.
In the past week a number of representatives of the Japanese steel industry visited the British Columbia legislature to negotiate potential coal exports to Japan. Government officials, including Economic Development Minister Don Phillips, have offered cautious optimism about a forthcoming agreement. The talks are viewed as among the most important for the government, with a successful outcome expected to significantly boost trade relations and energy supply.
A 51 year old man Jean Guy Laurendeau pleaded guilty in Vancouver provincial Court to possessing tools for breaking into coin operated devices and theft under 200 dollars. He was sentenced to five months in jail after investigators tied him to tampering with downtown telephones and stealing deposited coins. In New Westminster, 27 year old Bruce Bettenson of Montreal was fined 300 dollars after pleading guilty to two counts of theft of telecommunication services. He billed long distance calls from a New Westminster phone to his wife in Montreal, charging a third Montreal number and was ordered to pay restitution of 20 dollars to B C Tel.
The Chetwynd Minor Hockey Banquet at the Elks Hall on April 30 honored Wayne Berlinger with the Minor Hockey Service award for his extensive time promoting the game. Glyn Rogers praised the younger players as a super age group and plans for a Junior C league and provincial playoffs next year.
Susan Schreiber was crowned the 1980 High School Rodeo Queen at the rodeo grounds. Her princess is Carmie Keller, with five contestants and their horses demonstrating riding skill and animal care knowledge. The 1980 81 executive was named with Phyl Brown as president and a list of officers and staff for the coming year.
Wes Hobson joins Chetwynd Realty Ltd as Manager bringing 19 years in real estate and prior leadership at Canada Permanent Trust in Victoria. He is a former president of the Society of Real Estate Appraisers and has held roles with the Mortgage Investment Association of B C and the Estate Planning Council of Victoria. Ann Dusseault also joins to head the new Insurance Division with experience as a real estate and insurance agent and long involvement in Cowichan Valley community groups.
