A March 3 1982 public meeting in Chetwynd drew about thirty attendees including Hydro press reps. Mayor Lasser spoke in favor of Site C noting regional benefits and ample land from the Del Rio ranch while stressing no negative impacts. Panel members introduced by Keith Henry heard questions on farming, power supply, and potential regional recreation considerations.
The Chamber of Commerce met at the Little Swiss Inn with President Bob Shirley presiding and fourteen members present. Reports covered a Vancouver firm talk on Soci-Impact of coal at Mt Lemoray if Utah mines start in 1983, a 9 AM to 6 PM bus tour for 47 people to Tumbler Ridge, budget considerations amid government restraint, Petro-Can stage two report releases, satellite annexation talks, and ideas for boosting tourism and information services. Residents urged Site C dam support with trade offs, citing local benefits from cheaper on site power and long range regional growth.
Several residents voiced opposition to a Red Rooster location at 48th Street and South Access Road. Concerns cite three thriving local confectioneries during a recession and the desire not to cluster stores on the same end of town. An alternative Rodeo Subdivision site was suggested. Mrs Yee opposes gas pumps alongside the store, fearing hardship for her family.
PRAHTA and Alaska Highway committees held meetings in Fort Nelson February 12 and 13 Mayors and representatives attended. PRAHTA Passport and logo were approved. Plans to promote tourism and boost regional prosperity were outlined with zoning debates and public hearings pending.
A well known food distributor and a BC hotel operator with multiple North East locations are among five finalists to build in Tumbler Ridge town centre. Kelly Douglas backs a 1765 square meter Super Valu on the supermarket site while Coachline Inns pursues a 60 room hotel near the mall street.
