Ottawa announces a free telephone hotline for Canadian small businesses seeking ombudsman help to reduce paperwork problems. The Paperburden Office operates weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. ET and accepts collect calls, using the number 613 995 9197.
Red Rock Cinema began operation with its first show last Thursday in a modern theatre next to the former Rex theatre. The 400 seat venue features gold, rust, green and brown decor, a separate ticket area, air conditioning, and comfortable rows. It is owned by Mr and Mrs H Garbanovski, while the Rex building is up for sale or rent.
Grace McCarthy announced the province wide 1978 Super Smile tourism drive to begin the week of June 19. A kickoff event is planned June 20 at 10:00 a.m. at Vanier Park near the Centennial Museum with hospitality and entertainment sectors. Mayors will declare Smile Day and Smile Week province wide to attract visitors to British Columbia.
Chetwynd issued 25 permits valued at 1 662 260 dollars in May, bringing year to date totals to 56 permits worth 3 030 984 dollars. May permits include 12 new residences, 5 alterations, 6 commercial, 1 industrial, 1 moving, and 1 government project, with a 28 unit town house development and several business projects under way shaping a busy townwide construction scene.
The Annual Spring Conference of the British Columbia Trustees Association at Laurel Point Inn in Victoria drew strong attendance. Minister Sam Rawlf spoke on the new library funding formula, with George Giles as guest speaker at lunch. Officers elected: W. Parker, Dolly Kennedy, Nora Stocks, H. Lattey, Nell Horth, M. Gordon, and Bunne Hoffman as North East Area Rep.
Three horses and their owners captured trophies and ribbons at the South Peace Horse Show in Grande Prairie held June 9 10 11 with judge Tom Bell of Dewinton. Vi Smith rode her registered quarter horse Willies to high marks.
Chetwynd sends four boys Lee Didier Tim Shirley Elvis Paquette and Bernie Stoski to the Midget Zone Team for track and field at the B C Summer Games August 19 20 in Penticton BC Zone 8 coverage extends from the Northeast Sector south to Williams Lake. Daughter wins six awards including top horses and riding trophies.
A summer catechism program runs July 3 to July 16 across multiple churches in Chetwynd Hudson Hope Moberly Lake Kelly Lake and Moberly Lake with two Oblate brothers Br Tom Maquisin and Br Maynard Boomars and nine recruits from Eastern Canada. The course leads to First Communion and Confirmation by Bishop O Grady with daily sessions for Catholic schoolchildren 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. except weekends.
