The community of Chetwynd gathered for the Rodeo Parade despite heavy rain. Entries were prepared with care and were enjoyed by all spectators. Winners were Commercialist Westgate’s.
Metis Association of British Columbia schedules a June conference at the Dawson Creek Exhibition Grounds to discuss entrenched Metis rights, land and water access, self government, representation, and a Metis Rights Commission and Metis Peoples Court. Attendees include Metis from four western provinces with officials from federal and provincial governments and Metis National Council members.
In a wild town scene the Frontier Sheriff and posse hijack Bunne Hoffman from the Pony Express Echo office. Bunne is taken to a mobile jail while a mob of locals and many named townsfolk are paraded, bribed, and plied with ransoms for the Fetal Heart Monitor Fund, as pie throwing and cold showers punctuate the chaotic rodeo style spectacle.
In Tumbler Ridge British Columbia public health workers vaccinated more than 350 Quintette Coal camp residents and others who ate at the 300 man camp after a camp baker was diagnosed with infectious hepatitis. Nurse Myrna Draper explained hepatitis A spreads in crowded conditions via food water or sewage and that vaccination prevents jaundice. Most recover with no lasting liver scarring though alcohol may be restricted for months.
Shane Larsen of Vanld Kennes and Tara led the line collecting nine ribbons including top honours for a German Shepherd plus two best of three and two group seconds. Shara Larsen with Cyrus captured best male and best opposite in a strong showing.
The Camber of Commerce chose Peter Morrison as selector supervisor for an Economic Development Commissioner for Chetwynd with District Council and CAR D members on the committee. Three people were hired under the NEED program to study Crime Prevention in Chetwynd. Sergeant Cunningham seeks free month to month office space at the Airport Terminal during a 48 week employment period.
Jim Webb a former nine year police officer in the United States and now in Canada will join four speakers at the Seminar on youth and The Law on June 16 at the Industrial site of N L C. He has studied community based criminal justice and worked as research officer for diversion programs in Calgary. Webb will discuss community involvement in preventing juvenile delinquency and alternatives to the court system.
