Pulp and Paper Sector Forecast Shows Growth to 1988

A CPPA report forecasts Canadian capacity to manufacture paper and board reaching 17.6 million tonnes in 1988, up 7 percent from 1985, with total pulp capacity at 24.9 million tonnes, a 4.3 percent rise. Printing and writing papers lead gains, driven by new machines and conversions in New Brunswick, Quebec, and British Columbia.

Woodworkers strike in British Columbia enters second week

Vancouver CP reports a prolonged strike by International Woodworkers of America has shut many BC mills and camps. Union and Forest Industrial Relations clash over contracting out work to non union contractors. About 3,500 workers returned to some northern Interior operations after a separate agreement, while 4,000 of BC's 31,000 unionized workers may be off the job this week. The dispute also cites the US Northwest contract as a reference point, with potential impact on BC wage and benefit levels.

Local Incidents Report From Stagecoach Inn to Highway 97

A hit and run damaged a 1986 Subaru in Stagecoach Inn parking. A 1984 GMC 5 ton Van rolled onto its side east of Chetwynd on Highway 97, 10,000 dollars in damage, no injuries. July 18 theft of gas from School Bus Garage. Between July 27 and 29 seven accidents reported, four with personal injuries, none serious, involving ten people. One impaired charge and another alcohol offense. A Fort St John Western Star Semi rolled and burned, complete destruction. Two local men arrested for disturbance at Silver Coin Arcade.
