Jim Best, a 13 year veteran of B C Tel and 15 years with CN Telecommunications, has expert knowledge of step-by-step switching. In Chetwynd he maintains the central office gear as a combination man for nine years. The local office will convert to electronic common control ECC early next year, offering him a chance to learn and manage the new system.
Rick Hyde reports Best, longtime B.C. Tel employee in Chetwynd since May 1969, chooses company training to qualify for ECC equipment. He fears losing status as the lone man office but hopes to remain in his role as the area’s lead contact as the community expands. The three week intro logic course precedes a six week ECC program taught by Network training supervisor Dale Topham in Dawson Creek.

The B C Metric Conversion Office warns a fake Metric Bulletin claims after September 1 a dozen will have 10 items and a gross 100 units. It also says beer and eggs must be sold in packs of five and 10. Director Gene Gosh calls it a hoax and notes a dozen remains 12 by definition. The real bulletin comes from the federal Metric Commission.
Additional engineering and exploratory work on hydro-electrical potential at Site C on the Peace River will be carried out this summer and fall, as part of B C Hydro's ongoing studies.
Will's Enterprises reports half of the water line installed in Legion subdivision this week. Will's Construction, based in Kamloops BC, holds the contract for water and sewer lines in the subdivision and Industrial Park. A three man crew laid 600 feet of pipe in four days amid muddy conditions with no delays, with remaining water lines and sewer work continuing in the coming days.
The Public Library’s July story hours drew up to 29 children for films and bone chilling tales, with 16 attending the puppet craft sessions. Librarian Marianne Hall notes the program’s success and mentions plans for a fall version while the library closes July 31 to August 14 for painting.
The work outlines geotechnical investigations and design studies to prove structure safety and determine land needs for construction access borrow and disposal areas. It also defines slope stability for the proposed reservoir. Public hearings would use this data if Hydro seeks a water licence for the project located about 80 kilometres downstream of the Peace Canyon site.
Ken Williams joins the Peace River Health Unit as the new audiologist in Fort St. John replacing Denny Gienger who moves to Burnaby. Williams, a married father of two, holds a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Clinical Science in communicative disorders from the University of Western Ontario. He has worked at University Hospital London and Sick Children's Hospital Toronto and taught at Western. He will assess and treat referrals from local family physicians.
High to extreme fire danger remained in the Chetwynd forest area with the Isle fire near Hudson's Hope about four acres. Fire crews attended, mainly to two log piles on an island in the Peace River. Rain has not yet brought a water licence decision for Site C as BC Hydro awaits engineering and environmental results. Site C drilling involves 60 holes, 3 bore holes, a 70 metre exploratory adit, trenches and 25 test pits through mid October.
The 66th National Convention of the BPOE and the 54th National Convention of the Order of Royal Purple met in St Johns Newfoundland from July 23 to 26. Charlie Clarke of Thompson Manitoba was elected Grand Exalted Ruler and Dorothy MacMillan of Saskatoon Supreme Honored Royal Lady for the coming term.
