Chetwynd Village Council approved a bylaw to accept the Community Plan. An advisory committee of local citizens worked with a consulting firm of engineers and planners to develop the plan. Final reports from Survey & Analysis and the Community Plan are due in September.
Forest fire danger remains low to moderate across most of British Columbia due to cool, damp conditions. Isolated hot spots persist in Barriere Lillooet and Cranbrook. Ninety eight new fires this week with 63 still burning. 148000 pounds of long term retardant dropped from airtankers. Total this season 694 fires burning 6296 acres, versus 490 fires and 99644 acres last year. Suppression costs to date 879505 this year against 1533920 in 1976.
Scouts from Chetwynd visited Summerside City Hall to extend greetings from President Bunne Hoffman and the Chamber of Commerce. Mayor Mullins received the delegation in a formal chambers setting.
PRAHTA directors approve a plan to promote Region H at the Pacific National Exhibition. Don Ashley says it will present the region’s story. The Peace River historical societies gain a 40 square foot display from Aug 20 to Sept 8, with initial offer to Dawson Creek. Walter Wright leads the project and will oversee booth staffing with regional involvement.
The Chetwynd tennis facility, reshaped since spring, will soon open near the baseball diamonds between the arena and high school. A club raffle winner, Len Wilfur, took home a tennis racket, balls, a frame and tote bag. Volunteers from the Peace River Society helped fence the court area and Don Ashley will run the exhibition booth selling Region H materials.
The Peace River Liard Regional District and Mackenzie region allocated about 443 892 dollars for 197 projects, funding 401 students. In Chetwynd 14 projects supported 30 students with 25 019 dollars. Canfor Chetwynd Division funded 9 weeks for 5 students totaling 3 760 dollars. Veterinarians Clinic 1 student 17 weeks 832 dollars. Sukunka Automotive 2 students. Hospital Board 1 student 1 099 dollars. Additional funds supported municipal beautification 4 students 4 399 dollars. Chamber of Commerce Tourist Booth 3 students 5 197 dollars. Lasser Ranches Misty Meadows Moberly Lake and Gimmys Gorge student programs. Mrs. Greenwood Moberly Lake 1 student nine weeks 564 dollars. Hudson Hope 6 projects 11 students 9 378 dollars. Peace View Enterprises and Mr Hamanashi four students 2 736 dollars. Summer Bros and Allen Ranches four students 3 344 dollars. two municipal programs aquatic and parks maintenance three students 3 298 dollars.
Hundreds of Smile Buttons arrived in Chetwynd as BC tourism promotes a hospitable welcome. The Chamber of Commerce Tourist Counsellors will contact hospitality staff to participate, with a large Smile Button replica painted on the Tourist Booth to urge workers to greet visitors with a smile.
The council discussed a mobile trailer sign used at the Little Village Inn and Recreation Centre. Bob Walkden argued the sign on his property is licensed by the Department of Highways and thus permissible, while noting the village lacks a by law on mobile signs. Safety concerns about an extension cord were raised.
Walei Crescent residents led by Philip Gladue and Helaine Mineault urged action at a village meeting over packs of dogs running at large. Concerns cited include child safety and lawn damage. Council will deploy patrols and rules for mobile signs were debated, with a committee ruling allowing battery powered signs on streets or use on private property.
A Summerside delegation of Scouts reported back from the Canadian Jamboree in Prince Edward Island presenting the Chamber of Commerce with a flag and greetings from the Mayor. Ricky Rosendahl and Lee McAvany noted their distinctive Little Giant Chamber of Commerce shirts among a crowd of 17 000 Scouts. The patrol and their leader delivered greetings from the local Chamber to the Summerside Mayor.

Twenty two lots go to auction this week at the Legion Hall on August 4 with four lots near mile 199 of Highway 97 on the north side by Sundance Lake and eighteen lots of about 4 to 5 acres near Jackfish Lake. The sale covers the lease payment for one year plus the lease fee and the bid. Details of terms are at the Village Office.
