Canada British Columbia Western Northlands Highways program nets over 140 million for two contracts. Miller Cartage and Emil Anderson Construction will build 27 miles of Stewart Cassiar Highway 37 creating about 1 035 jobs. Chetwynd Lodge 308 of the Royal Purple earned a certificate at the 53rd Supreme Lodge session in Thunder Bay Ontario for placing third in BC by per capita donations to the Purple Cross Fund. 55 members contributed $1,294.15 total. Mica Creek led BC with 49 members at $26.81 and Agassiz had 47 members at $25.81. Canadian-wide, OORP of Flin Flon topped the nation with first place. The Royal Purple of Canada donated $106,411.66 to Deaf Detection programs, surpassing last year by over $1,400, and Fort St. John audiology centers benefited from a $10,000 contribution.

BC Fires Held In Check As Season Advances
Weather across British Columbia has kept fire danger moderate to high in the southern interior and southern Vancouver Island. Hot spots remain in Barriere Lillooet Ashcroft Merritt Princeton and the Okanagan with high to extreme risk. Forty four new fires reported this week, with Kamloops district accounting for about half. Airtankers dropped 12,800 pounds of retardant. Budworm larvae in over 720,000 acres have moved to the pupal stage. To date 803 fires burned 6,300 acres this year, versus 615 fires and 99,837 acres by this time last year. Estimated suppression costs total 1,003,100, down from 1,830,570 in 1976.
