Chetwynd couple fined for tax evasion
A Dawson Creek court fined Leo and Lauren White a total of 16195.78 for four counts of tax evasion and GST avoidance tied to 1993 and 1994 income. As directors of 520733 Alberta Ltd. they faced additional penalties for not reporting 35945.14 in income and 2516.16 GST. They ceased operations in 1995 and moved to Chetwynd. If unpaid by June 18, 1997, twelve months imprisonment awaits plus arrears to both levels of government.

Chetwynd Council briefs on grants and plaza plans
Five groups asked for grants including Chetwynd Childcare Society seeking funds to advertise daycare positions near Northern High College and the Foeza and Art Trading Common proposing barter bucks printing. Council will announce decisions July 16 at the next meeting. Plaques valued around 4000 will honor over 200 names on the new IGA Plaza. The plaza came in 5 under the 120000 budget with funding partly from the District and a business levy. Opposition cited naming many individuals. mayor also questioned the 4000 cost. The Chamber seeks to move a former tourist building to a more visible site for use as Chetwynd’s tourist centre. Garbage disposal fee rises 25 percent to support regionalization under the Waste Management Plan.
