Critters and Beasts of Moberly Lake Birds
Winter brings a surge of birds to Moberly Lake led by large flocks of common redpolls. Females and likely juveniles outnumber pink-vested males by about 25 to one. Downy and hairy woodpeckers visit fat bags, forage under bark, and drum on unusual surfaces to attract mates. Woodpeckers' long red tongues, strong necks, and reinforced skulls enable bark foraging. Cavities in snags host chickadees, wood ducks, goldeneyes, nuthatches, tree swallows, flying squirrels, and shelter for cold nights.
