Waterfront rents soar as lakefront land prices jump

Provincially owned lakefront leases at Moberly and One Island Lake rose up to 500 percent with rents reaching 450 for properties that once rented for 40 to 80 annually. Private assessments also climbed sharply from 167 to 990 for one case and 182 to 1350 for another, while government land rents hinge on market value set by the province with leases renewing after five years.

Phillips presses chamber on future of Chetwynd power

M.L.A. Don Phillips spoke at the Chetwynd Chamber Civic Night urging action on energy and economic policy. He criticized spring session legislation, warned of a potential power crisis in ten years, urged residents to push Victoria to protect local rights on housing and extensions, and highlighted energy prices and the Sukunka deal.

Pfanner Named Chetwynd Citizen of the Year 1973

Ernest Pfanner, a 25 year resident, was named Chetwynd 1973 Citizen of the Year during the Chamber of Commerce Civic Night. Past recipient Bunne Hoffman presented the award as Pfanner received a standing ovation for his service to the community. He helped found Little Prairie business ventures, built the first gas station, organized power and schooling efforts, and served as postmaster and school board member as Chetwynd grew.

Civic Night Banquet Sees Growth Aboard in Chetwynd

The Civic Night Banquet at Hotel Chetwynd on January 9 drew over ninety guests despite cold weather. Mayor Maurice Hayward, Alder men Willard Dunn and Ernest Pfanner, and 1974 Chamber of Commerce executives were sworn in by Mr. Wm Williams. John Jackman, as MC, outlined last year’s Chamber activities and forecast strong northeastern BC development around Chetwynd over the next decade. Treasurer Bunne Hoffman reported a bank balance of $1,384.65 from memberships, grants, village support and sale of Little Giants pins.

Million dollar milestone in Chetwynd construction permits

Construction in Chetwynd last year reached over one million dollars with permits breaking records. December 1973 data show yearly totals up to 1,061,848 for all permits and 226,604 for new residential construction. Industrial and government permits also contributed sizable amounts.

Appointed alderman fills vacancy in village council

Mr. Stewart Rix was appointed by the Village Council to serve as alderman for a two year term after no candidate stood in the civic elections held last November. He is a sales coordinator at Canfor Ltd Chetwynd Division.
