Horse logging in forestry program gains attention
In a Chetwynd area course, six students learn selective logging with horses as part of an 80 day Integrated Small Scale Forestry Training Program. Instructor Gauthier notes horses can yield a truckload a day for small operators, while proponents cite lower environmental damage and job opportunities. Ministry officials see growing use and aim for 20 percent of wood harvested by alternative methods, including horse logging.
