BC Finance Minister hints at easing restraint in next budget
British Columbia Finance Minister Hugh Curtis signaled a possible easing of the restraint program in the coming fiscal year, while stressing the approach remains in place. He announced a new budget within a month for the year starting April 1 and noted the restraint need not be as severe as during revenue declines. The third quarter report showed deficits widening beyond the 1984-85 forecast, with total interim deficit about 720 million and debt service costs of 194.6 million. A weak export base and low commodity prices underpin the slow recovery, though inflation was four percent in 1984 and retail sales rose five percent the first time inflation-led growth was outpaced.
