Fort Nelson Fort Simpson Highway contract awarded
SSR Contracting of Whitehorse won the bid for clearing the final 47.74 kilometres of the Fort Nelson Fort Simpson Liard Highway from Tsinhia Lake to the BC-NWT border. The project costs about 450000 dollars including supervision and materials and will hire up to 20 workers over roughly 10 weeks starting next week.

Scout Guide Thrift Shop opens in joint Boy Scout Guide effort
The Boy Scout Girl Guide Thrift Shop opened on Friday February 3 1978 at 7 30 p m in a ceremony led by Mrs R Larsen with vice chair Ed Hoffmann introducing dignitaries including Steve Vatamaniuck district commissioner South Peace Boy Scouts Sonja Stogryn commissioner Girl Guides of Canada Peace River Area Wink Wheeler Legion Branch No 258 president Nora Wheeler auxiliary president Wade Beauchamp and Debbie McAvany representing the Scouts and Guides. Vatamaniuck lauded the joint venture as the first thrift shop run by both groups. Stogryn praised the project as both business and community service benefiting all. Wheeler spoke of Legion sponsorship and hope for the shop’s success. Beauchamp and McAvany held the ribbon as the ceremony opened. (Continued on page 4)

Pine Pass Lodge fire destroys historic inn along Highway 97
A Sunday blaze gutted Pine Pass Lodge the oldest building on Highway 97 North. Owner John Pettit said the fire started in the kitchen, destroying a restaurant and forcing a gas station closure, leaving an 80 km stretch without service. Local officials announced BC gas pipeline projects worth over $150 million will start immediately, creating up to 900 jobs, with the Grizzly Valley and Silver Dahl lines connecting gas fields near Dawson Creek and Fort St. John to processing plants and Westcoast Transmission.

School library officially opened at Windrem Chetwynd school
The Library Room at Windrem Chetwynd Elementary Secondary School was declared officially open on January 30, 1978, with Dr A Newberry, District Superintendent, presiding alongside Board Chairman Mrs R Wilson and Trustee Mr E Pfanner. A commemorative book was given to principals S Campbell and S Conn and librarian Mrs Yvonne Elden. Thirty four citizens attended and remained for the regular School Board meeting.
