River Area The B C Telephone Company foresees a record surge in long distance calls during Christmas Day with 17 500 attempts forecast within the 24 hours. District Manager Peter A Williams noted the expected peak amid the postal dispute and the continued page 4 continuation.
Fourteen year old Robert Kountz of Chetwynd is set to return home for Christmas after minor injuries from a bus crash in Willow Flats. The accident on highway 97 involved a school bus carrying five, including the driver and four children. Enrollment in November rose at Chetwynd area elementary schools by two, while Dawson Creek area elementary schools lost four and secondary attendance dropped by 21, with total district enrollment at 5 839, down 23 from October.
Education Minister Eileen Dailly announced BC public schools reduced the pupil teacher ratio from 22.68 in October 1972 to 19.14 currently, with 67 of 74 districts improving. The report notes teaching staff rose 20.9 percent from 22,702 to 27,455 over three years, and class sizes are expected to fall further when new figures are compiled.
Chetwynd marks its annual Civic Night Banquet at the Elks Hall on January 10 not 17 as previously announced. Pres. Larry Tuck of the Chamber of Commerce handles ticket sales.
