Two aldermen sworn in at council meeting

Peace River area. The Village of Chetwynd swore in two aldermen at an inaugural ceremony on Monday. Wilson Sr. is a newcomer taking Bunne Hoffman’s seat, while Marian Hoover returns for a third term and will serve as acting mayor. Mayor Pfanner thanked Mrs Hoffman for her service. Hoffman promised continued support amid change and opportunity in the province. The 1981 council committees and chairs were outlined, with members including Hoover, Wilson, Braaten, Dar, and Pfanner across Public Works, Streets, Water, Parks, Planning, Finance, and Industrial Development. Copies of the provisional budget and bylaw were issued to council.

Peer Tutoring 11 program helps CSI students at CESS

Grade 12 student Cherie Pulver describes Peer Tutoring 11 at C.E.S.S. with 16 high school tutors assisting younger students. Started last September by Learning Assistance teacher Jeremy Ashton, the full year credit course trains tutors with a handbook and learning-goal plans to address academic and personal problems.

New radiotelephone channels aid Peace River area demand

Wayne Collins, North Peace River Customer Service Manager, says 23 VHF radiotelephone channels are now available in the Peace River area with eight new X channels and three more coming this year to total 26. The X channels will supplement existing manually operated lines and serve mobiles roaming from Alberta, easing congestion amid unprecedented demand.

Chetwynd permits near ten million in 1980 totals

Building permits in Chetwynd from January to November 1980 reached 9,803,348 dollars, up 2 million from the previous year. Residential led with 7,161,704 dollars, followed by commercial 1,052,000 dollars, government and institutional 221,000, and industrial 107,000. A Christmas ping pong ball drop sponsored by local merchants faced weather delays. Okanagan Helicopters donated flight time and adapted to rain to ensure safety. An alphabetical list thanks participating merchants and notes the Echo and Pioneer provided publicity.

Police Beat report details two burglaries and hit and run

Police report a hit and run at Johnson Creek Road and Highway 97 after an empty logging truck trailer sideswiped a vehicle. A break in at Rondeau apartments leaked storage room items, a lawn mower stolen. The Little Swiss Inn was entered overnight with a cash register taken and money missing. the register later found nearby. Police investigate ongoing.
