Sukunka River floods roadway
Unusually warm temperatures and heavy rains in the mountains caused flooding on the Sukunka River Road early last week. Department of Highways crews blasted ice backing up along the river to protect the Twidwell Bend bridge. Three vehicles forded the river and were stranded while companies airlifted employees in and out of Grizzly Valley as floodwaters receded by mid week.

Auxiliary RCMP Auxiliaries Seek Insurance Plan
Chetwynd R C M P auxiliary members asked village council to fund a plan covering the wage gap between Workers Compensation and regular pay. Spokesman Bill Whitter said eight auxiliaries contribute about 16 hours monthly each, with only uniform and WC provided. A $400 total would fund the plan. council will review at next meeting.

Lainsbury backs planning changes for village area
Village planner J M Lainsbury released a letter to the council after December 1 public hearings endorsing the designation of D L 2092 near weigh scales for light industrial use. He opposed designating Lot 2 plan 17410 for higher density residential and urged by law amendments only after specific terms. He labeled most zoning amendments premature and said further agreements and highway access clarifications are needed before resolution.

CHET Radio CHETwynd Rebroadcast Debuts on 1450 AM
CJDC launched CHET Radio on December 16 and plans Chetwynd originated programming from a 1000 watt rebroadcast facility on Wabi Mountain at 1450 kilohertz. Mike Michaud says CHET will cover local events with a news staff of one and expects to hire another. It may become a fully independent station.

Teck plans Burnt River coal open pit mine in B C
Teck Corporation of Vancouver told council at its December 16 meeting of plans to develop a road mining project on Burnt River coal licenses west of the Sukunka River near Burnt River Brazion Creek confluence. The open pit would produce thermal coal with 225 workers housed in Chetwynd. Construction hoped for spring 1982 completion, coal moved by truck to BC Railway at Chetwynd via a Sukunka River bridge. Prospectus sent to Coal Guidelines Steering Committee. Stage 1 Environmental Impact Statement expected within a month.
