New Blue Sky Opens In New Premises In Chetwynd

Ceremonies on November 30 1978 marked the opening of the New Blue Sky Restaurant on the south access road in Chetwynd BC Mrs Jackie Dar welcomed guests and introduced Mrs Ella Graham who cut the ribbon. Graham recalled her cafe origins with Allen and the first Shadybrook Cafe and noted oil activity and seismic crews expanding the lunch counter into a cafe. Howard and Jackie Dar are well known in the South Peace River area as Jackie's parents.

French CBC radio and TV services approved for Dawson Creek

The CRTC approved two CBC applications to rebroadcast French CBC content in Dawson Creek and the Grande Prairie area. A French language TV outlet will rebroadcast CBUFT Vancouver and a French FM station will carry Vancouver CBC programming. transmission should start next year. Howard and Jackie open New Blue Sky Restaurant in Dawson Creek with dining for 75 and cafe seating for 52.

Rail special carries regional leaders to Fort Nelson

A 320 mile BC Rail journey from Chetwynd to Fort Nelson carried Peace River Liard Regional District and Municipalities representatives for their quarterly meeting. Passengers saw wilderness, wolves near a moose, and received a warm Fort Nelson welcome with tours, a banquet, and local officials.

John Hart Highway reconstruction to start in May

A $5.24 million project to rebuild 16.6 kilometres of the John Hart Highway between the McLeod Lake Hotel and Crooked River Cabins will begin in early May and finish by late August 1980. Highways Minister Alex V. Fraser and MLA Howard Lloyd announced the contract was awarded to Geddes Contracting Company Ltd. of Kelowna at $3.92 million, with more than 60 workers planned. The work includes 3.9 kilometres of additional paving, grading, and resurfacing, plus substantial material and traffic improvements.

Nominations Sought for Chetwynd Citizen of the Year 1978

The Chamber of Commerce in Chetwynd BC seeks nominations for Citizen of the Year 1978. Nominations must be signed by two people with an outline of the nominee’s community contributions and mailed through the Post Office by December 29 to Box 1000. The winner will be announced at the Civic Night Banquet on Saturday January 13 1979.

Woman grabs throat by unknown assailant near railroad

At 6 30 p.m. on Wednesday November 29 a female Chetwynd resident on the north access road near the railroad crossing was grabbed about the throat by a knife wielding unknown man who forced her to accompany him she escaped and ran. Police hold a description and request witnesses in Chetwynd report any male seen near the tracks.
