Chamber hosts banquet for special guests

Chetwynd Chamber of Commerce hosted a banquet at the New Blue Sky Restaurant last Wednesday. Special guests were Jack Greenwood, B C Chamber President, and Jim Fitz Gibbon, Executive Director of the B C Chamber of Commerce, who addressed the gathering. They described the province wide business information access program as a joint effort with the local Chambers, the B C Chamber and the Ministry of Economic Development to aid small businesses.

Canfor announces Hal Smith leaving his ten year role as General Manager at Chetwynd and A J Bert McGraw named as his successor. McGraw joined Chetwynd management in 1974 with a civil engineering background and professional engineering credentials.

Royal commission flags political choice in BC Rail sale

The report says the British Columbia Railway is uneconomic and should be sold to Canadian National Railway if possible. If CN refuses, the government should shed direct control and allow a Crown corporation to run the line, amid criticism of political motives and subsidies for the Fort Nelson extension aiding two sawmills. The commission warns keeping the line costs the public more than the mills’ payroll.

Chetwynd Outreach closes and new service site opens

The Canada Employment Centre in Dawson Creek shifts services for Chetwynd residents to the Ministry of Human Resources Office on Wednesdays and Fridays from 10 00 a.m. to 12 00 noon starting December 6 1978. On site employer services continue with counsellor visits while unemployment insurance forms are available at the centre and at the Chetwynd Post Office. Premier Bill Bennett highlighted the Grizzly Valley pipeline project as a major growth milestone for British Columbia, with Westcoast Transmission Ltd. awaiting permit to flow gas and a Pine River processing plant planned to raise capacity to 250 million cubic feet daily next year. The project promises thousands of jobs and substantial gas reserves, boosting provincial and nearby markets.
