Northern Woods caravan greets visitors in Chetwynd
The Northern Woods and Water Route Association Caravan 78 arrived in Chetwynd on Thursday August 24. Local officials and Chamber members welcomed the travelers at the Little Giant, handing out pamphlets and maps before a reception at the Hotel. Leaders from McLennan Alberta and four Western Provinces highlighted the scenic route’s aim to promote northern Western Canada tourism and regional economies.

Couple celebrates Golden Anniversary with family in toast
Jane and Julius Martin marked their fiftieth wedding anniversary with a weekend gathering in August. Friends and relatives from Canada and the United States attended, with fifteen of their sixteen children, most of their thirty five grandchildren, and three great grandchildren present. The event at the Legion Hall included a formal supper for 150, speeches by Al Crothers and Buzz Kurjata, flowers from Darlene Evans, and gifts of gold watches to the couple.

Chetwynd Sees Grants for Sewer and Water Facilities
The Village of Chetwynd received 13839.51 for sewerage and 9002.28 for water facilities under provincial acts. Dawson Creek’s sewer grant reached 26362.06 with water at 100420.76, Pouce Coupe Village received 3981.22 sewer and 1426.55 water. Minister Hugh Curtis announced 107 cheques and noted grants are typically 75 percent of debt charges beyond 242 mills, with many programs more generous this year. Monthly unconditional Revenue Sharing grants total over 11,750,000 to BC’s 140 municipalities from April to December.

Butt Out smoking cessation van to visit Chetwynd
Action B C launches Butt Out a teen focused smoking cessation program. The red and white van with Kiwanis Crest will tour the province over nine months delivering health messages. Project Director Marie Tracy says teens seek reasons to quit and view smoking as air pollution and a false promise. The van arrives in Chetwynd on September 21.

Mobile Home Second Mortgages Allowed Under New Rules
Municipal Affairs Minister Hugh Curtis announced changes to the Home Purchase Assistance Act permitting second mortgages on mobile homes in parks. The Mobile Home Registry now handles relocation, ownership transfer, and security registrations, enabling financing akin to conventional housing. Changes apply to purchases on or after August 10, 1978.

Wonowon Hosts First Regional District Meeting

Forest fire arson case ends with fine and jail
A 19 year old man from Fort Ware in Mackenzie British Columbia pleaded guilty in provincial court to arson in a make work scheme. He admitted starting a forest fire to create employment and received a $1 fine plus one day in jail after earning a net 59 dollars. The fire burned for five days destroying 14 acres of timber valued around 5000 dollars and costing 34000 dollars to extinguish. Prosecutors said another adult and a juvenile will face charges for their roles in the same blaze.
