Winds that altered weather patterns have worsened fires across British Columbia. In the last 24 hours 134 new fires raised the total to 625. Lightning caused 75 new blazes in the Nelson forest district. The Jac fire near Quesnel breached guards and expanded by 1000 acres to 7000 acres in total.
Chetwynd may become the site of a minimum-security corrections prison. Council and the British Columbia government discuss feasibility costs and timing. Mayor Lasser notes similar prisons in other towns have caused no problems and cites talks with Surrey's mayor.
Braelyn Development Ltd informs Village Council of plans to install a trailer park on the district lot toward the Airport. The company demands no new land be zoned for a trailer park until capacity is reached and that the lot receive substandard servicing until residential zoning occurs. Council refers the matter to committee for further discussion. Councillors Hoover and others to review Braelyn’s demands.
Congratulations to Mr and Mrs Julius Martin on their 50th anniversary. Mr and Mrs Marcel Girard visited Prince George with Denise and Jon Nichols. A bear sighting prompts a cautious property watch in the High School Area. Dunn and Mayor Lasser back a housing resolution for illegal suites. Aldermen Jackman and Walkden oppose. Village Council considers Dog Licensing By law 201, with rules on dogs at large.
Maclean-Hunter Inc has agreed in principle to acquire all Sterling Newspapers shares from Conrad Black David Radler and Peter White. The deal covers nine daily papers nine weeklies two twice weekly titles plus printing plants. All BC properties except Summerside Journal Pioneer. Price undisclosed. Newspapers remain with Sterling headquarters Vancouver.
Local 213 of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers picketed Pacific Northern Gas and Westcoast Transmission on Saturday near Sukunka Road south of Chetwynd and later at Majestic Camp two miles west of town. A Dillingham line was enjoined to pass, with 500 Majestic employees honoring the strike. Local 213, certified in May 1977, has been on strike since June 1978 awaiting a first contract.
Environment Minister Jim Nielsen announced auctions for 13 574.46 acres of Crown agricultural land in the Peace River District. Twenty five parcels range from 307 to 989.7 acres and can be leased with 80 percent arable land cleared. sales take place in Dawson Creek on August 24 1978 at 2 00 p.m. and in Fort St John on August 15 1978 at 1 00 p.m. Information available from the Land Manager in Dawson Creek or Fort St John.
Mrs E R Naumann recently moved to Chetwynd from Kamloops and Vancouver. She studied classical guitar in Germany and Conservatory piano in Kamloops and Toronto, earning Grade 7 practical and Grade 2 theory. She continues study with Mrs Vlahovic and teaches her two children. Contact Mr Naumann at 788-9526.
Ay MSE De Lorne Reznowski, university professor and new head of the Social Credit Party, travels across Canada on a speaking tour. He will address a public meeting in Dawson Creek on August 30 at 8.
By law 203 received third reading allowing Chetwynd stores to stay open Wednesday afternoons until 6 00 pm while Friday hours remain 9 00 pm. Mayor Lasser cited tourist convenience during a July interview as the rationale for the Wednesday opening.
