Campfire firesat Jackfish Lake linked to abandoned fires

In 1988 the Dawson Creek District saw over twenty wildfires caused by abandoned campfires. One fire near a moose lick north of Chetwynd burned less than 2 hectares with air tanker help, while another on the Wapiti Lake Trail remained small due to quick initial attack. Abandoned campfires often smolder in duff ground cover and can reignite under the snow. Fire safety rules urge clearing sites, keeping fires small, staying with fires, and extinguishing thoroughly before leaving. Report fires to Zenith 5555.
