North East regional policing plan eyed by BC officials
Elected leaders from Peace River and Northern Rockies gathered in Chetwynd on August 7 to review the Made in the North East policing proposal. The plan centralizes 96 officers in Fort St. John, trims road duties by 10 to 15 percent, and shifts tax funding to land and improvements in urban areas while rural zones pay on improvements only. Critics warn regional policing could hurt local businesses with higher property taxes, and a final decision is expected around the upcoming UBCM conference with potential rollout in 2004.
