Seniors reshape Canada's population and lifestyle trends
The United Nations labeled 1999 as The International Year of Older Persons to boost cross generational harmony and recognize seniors. In Canada the senior population rose from 5 percent in 1921 to 12 percent in 1998, with Statistics Canada project ing 18 percent by 2021 and 23 percent by 2041. Life expectancy for 65 year olds has risen to 83, and those 85 plus are the fastest growing group. Women dominate in older age brackets due to longer lifespans. Chronic conditions are common, hospitalization rates are high, yet many seniors stay active with social and leisure activities, including walking and gatherings.
