Police report reports tire slashings in busy week

Police note a string of tire slashings during the night of August 1 into August 2 under investigation by the local RCMP. A truck at the village maintenance yard at the town’s west end had tires slashed along with several other tires on trucks.

Traffic counter theft and related charges near Chetwynd

A traffic counter four miles north of Chetwynd on Highway 29 was reported stolen on July 30 or 31, 1972, valued at $1,000. Abe Keith Dawson of no fixed address faced Motor Vehicle Act charges. he was jailed six months at Prince George Corrections Centre. Also reported were stolen Centennial Library flags and the death of Rene Beaudoin, found west of Chetwynd after being found hitchhiking. The Beaudoin case remains under investigation.

Reward posted for vandalism at Chetwynd ski lodge toilets

British Columbia Railway seals 250 million coal contract

Premier W A C Bennett announced BC Railway has completed a 20 year coal transport deal valued at 250 million dollars with Coalition Mining Limited and partners Brascan and Brameda Resources. The plan envisions 2 to 3.5 million tons yearly from the Sukunka deposit to Squamish, environmental safeguards included.

Breathalyzer to be used in Chetwynd this August

Chetwynd RCMP detachment has received a breathalyzer to be used the weekend of August 11. Drivers are reminded it is an offence to operate a vehicle with more than 0.08 percent blood alcohol and to refuse a breathalyzer test when demanded by a police officer.

Coal port at Squamish approved for deep sea ships growth

J S Broadbent of British Columbia Railway announced approval of a Squamish port designed to berth ships up to 150000 tons. The plan includes a 618 mile Chetwynd to Squamish coal line, 7000 ton initial trains, a 36 to 70 car per hour dumper, and fibreglass coal car covers to cut coal dust. Environmental protections aim to preserve the estuary and study life-support benefits for marine life and waterfowl.
