Police note a string of tire slashings during the night of August 1 into August 2 under investigation by the local RCMP. A truck at the village maintenance yard at the town’s west end had tires slashed along with several other tires on trucks.
A poetic summer sky scene opens with reflections on the heavens and night’s beauty. Local news notes Sgt and Mrs Crothers holidaying in the lower mainland, while families visit relatives in Kamloops and Dawson Creek. Several residents trek to Dawson Creek for the Premier’s talk, and Chetwynd hosts visitors from Alberta and Manitoba. Square dancers tour from Edmonton to BCH areas, staying two weeks with eight dances and a Legion-hosted buffet.
A traffic counter four miles north of Chetwynd on Highway 29 was reported stolen on July 30 or 31, 1972, valued at $1,000. Abe Keith Dawson of no fixed address faced Motor Vehicle Act charges. he was jailed six months at Prince George Corrections Centre. Also reported were stolen Centennial Library flags and the death of Rene Beaudoin, found west of Chetwynd after being found hitchhiking. The Beaudoin case remains under investigation.
The Chetwynd Ski Club offers a $50 reward for information leading to the conviction of those responsible for damage to the toilets beside the new lodge. Report tips to the R.C.M.P.
Premier W A C Bennett announced BC Railway has completed a 20 year coal transport deal valued at 250 million dollars with Coalition Mining Limited and partners Brascan and Brameda Resources. The plan envisions 2 to 3.5 million tons yearly from the Sukunka deposit to Squamish, environmental safeguards included.
A local director of Adult Education coordinates social workers magistrates and health services to boost cooperation among agencies. Simpson Sears opens a Catalogue Sales Agency in Chetwynd British Columbia on August 10 1972 with orders filled in Vancouver and delivered to the local agent for pickup. BC Telephone and BC Hydro urge parties and voters to avoid posters on poles during the provincial campaign due to hazards to linemen. The Chetwynd Public Library promotes adult education and a library display of political materials, inviting residents to visit Wednesdays in August.
Chetwynd RCMP detachment has received a breathalyzer to be used the weekend of August 11. Drivers are reminded it is an offence to operate a vehicle with more than 0.08 percent blood alcohol and to refuse a breathalyzer test when demanded by a police officer.
J S Broadbent of British Columbia Railway announced approval of a Squamish port designed to berth ships up to 150000 tons. The plan includes a 618 mile Chetwynd to Squamish coal line, 7000 ton initial trains, a 36 to 70 car per hour dumper, and fibreglass coal car covers to cut coal dust. Environmental protections aim to preserve the estuary and study life-support benefits for marine life and waterfowl.
