Jim Best, a 28 year telecommunications veteran with BC Tel and CN, has managed switching gear in Chetwynd for nine years. As the local central office converts to electronic common control, he will upgrade his skills to maintain the new ECC equipment.
In Chetwynd BC, long time BP Tele employee Best chose to join Company training to qualify for ECC equipment. He faced fears about binary logic and math but completed a three week intro course before entering a six week ECC program. The change aims to keep him as the single point for phone troubles and service requests as the office grows from one to two staff. The training, taught by Dale Topham in Dawson Creek, marks a significant shift in local telephony operations.
Chetwynd notes remind readers that small gestures bring big warmth. House guests include Liz Campbell’s parents Mr and Mrs Jack Seneshen and Liz’s sister Diane, from Revelstoke BC, visiting with Liz and Willy Campbell. Prince George-Peace River MP Frank Oberle said Ottawa and the provinces clash over lotteries in Canada. He noted a 1976 pledge not to extend Loto Canada beyond 1979 without agreement and new legislation. He cautioned that plans by Iona Campagnolo suggest extending the lottery beyond 1979, sparking jurisdiction and revenue disputes.
The B C Metric Conversion Office warns of a fake Metric Bulletin claiming a dozen drops to 10 after September 1 and a gross of 144 to 100, with beer and eggs sold in packs of five and ten. Gene Gosh says a dozen remains 12 by definition. the genuine bulletin is from the federal Metric Commission. The bogus sheet also shows Canada’s metric symbol leaning left.
Additional engineering and exploratory work related to B C Hydro's studies of hydro electrical potential at Site C on the Peace River will be carried out this summer and fall.
Will's Construction, based in Kamloops BC, reports half of the Legion subdivision water and sewer line work finished with a three man crew laying 600 feet of pipe in four days amid mud. Remaining services will continue in the coming days as library story hours celebrate summer.
The work includes geo technical investigations and design studies to demonstrate structural safety and determine land needs for construction, access, borrow and disposal areas. It defines slope stability for the proposed reservoir and would support public hearings if Hydro seeks a water licence, for a site about 80 kilometres downstream of the Peace Canyon project.
Mr. Ken Williams is named audiologist for the Peace River Health Unit, replacing Denny Gienger in Burnaby. Williams will live in Fort St. John with his wife and two children, bringing degrees from the University of Western Ontario and experience at London Ontario University Hospital and Sick Children’s Hospital. Foresters and a crew fought two log piles amid rain, while Hydro explores power needs and Site C drilling and testing through mid October as it weighs a water licence and future projects.
The 66th National Convention of the BPO Elks and the 54th National Convention of the Order of Royal Purple met in St Johns Newfoundland from July 23 to 26.
