BC expects a milder fire season with heavy snowpack
Victoria BC officials anticipate a potentially better year than 1981 due to heavy snowpack in most areas as the forest fire season opens April 15. Caution is urged for rapid spring runoff and possible rain shortages, especially in the north where drought has persisted. The 1982 plan expands electronic lightning detectors province wide, cites lightning as the cause of most fires, and details resources including 15 air tankers, nine birddog aircraft, three bases with helicopter crews, 370 ministry personnel, standby crews, patrols in high risk areas, and industry suppression teams.
